Control your mind, control your life – the concept of neuroplasticity

Throughout my years as a therapist, I have seen clients with a wide range of issues, from phobias, anxiety, and depression to severe alcohol dependency. The vast majority of my clients describe feeling 'stuck' in their issues or thoughts. They have often tried various approaches to get out of this, but ultimately come to see me because they have exhausted all of their resources. They no longer feel in control of the issue.

Before I started my psychological studies, I assumed that the adult brain was hard-wired, with fixed neurological pathways. During my studies and clinical practice, I discovered the fascinating research being done by neuroscientists into neuroplasticity. This research field has enabled us to understand that through reinforcement of sensory information, we can rewire the brain through 'synaptic pruning' – where some synapses weaken and others strengthen, or if left unused, disappear completely.

It means that clients can begin to take control of their thoughts and ultimately their lives.

As a therapist, this is a phenomenon. It means that clients can begin to take control of their thoughts and ultimately their lives. This process involves teaching clients about their brain and thoughts, how past experiences shape their thinking and lives, their internal dialogue, visualisation, and goal focusing.

As a therapist of 17 years, I have witnessed the tremendous impact that our brain's ability to change has had on clients' lives. If you're feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, let's explore how neuroplasticity can help you regain control.
